Dogs who received medical care through Bessie’s Legacy

Bessie’s Friends

Bessie’s Legacy is Rain or Shine Rescue’s medical fund, created to support rescue dogs and cats in need of major medical intervention. These are Bessie’s Friends, animals who have directly benefitted from this special fund.

Orvis - what a huge spleen you have!

Senior girl Orvis was abandoned at a Georgia shelter in her golden years. We pulled her from impending euthanasia but when she arrived in NYC, we were shocked to see her distended abdomen. It turns out that she had an enormous splenic tumor and we rushed her into surgery - where a NINE pound mass was removed along with her spleen!

Orvis is recovering nicely in her foster home while we wait for the biopsy results. Her medical care has run up a bill of $3,200 so far. Donations to Bessie’s Legacy will help us defray some of the cost.

Abuelo - a super senior miracle

18-year-old Abuelo lived on the streets of Philadelphia all his life until we brought him into rescue. With the number of medical issues he has, it’s a miracle that he remains such an affectionate and spunky little dumpling!

He is now on lifelong medication of hypothyroidism, and just had dental surgery to remove ALL his teeth - every single one was rotten to the core! He also had a ONE pound mass removed from his chest - which is huge when you remember that he only weighs ten pounds!

Abuelo’s medical bill is approximately $3,500 so far. Donations to Bessie’s Legacy will help us cover part of the cost.

Smoky - living on a prayer

Smoky was a pregnant stray wandering the streets of Rio Grande City (TX)- facing starvation and riddled with heartworms. After we got her spayed and treated for heartworms, she suddenly developed Stump Pyometra - an infection that can become fatal without surgical intervention.

Smoky’s surgery date is upon us and we’re hoping to raise an additional $500 through Bessie’s Legacy to cover her $3,500 medical and surgery costs. Please donate if you can!
